Goodwill Plant Stand Makeover

Welcome to Metamorphosis Monday and Today's Thrifty Treasures on Huckleberry Prairie!

This week I am sharing a plant stand find and makeover! I found the heart shaped plant stand at the Goodwill this weekend. They were having a 50% off the entire store sale! Guess how much I purchased this for. Go ahead, guess!

$2.50!!
What a bargain! Ha! ;)

The second I saw it, I knew it just HAD to be painted red. ;)

This red. ;)
The plant stand is enjoying being bathed in it's first coat of red paint...

And here it is after another coat and a little sanding:
I wanted to shabby it up a bit... but wanted the dark color to pop through (hence, not priming it first).

I made a little floral arrangement to pretty up the plant stand...

Started with a clear vase. Added a little bit of fun potpourri.

And added some red, green and wood to the arrangement. Of course it isn't complete without and red and white gingham bow (my favorite).

Not bad for $2.50 and a little red love. :)

Metamorphosis Monday: Old Cupboard Makeover

Welcome to Metamorphosis Monday on the prairie!
Its time for an old barn wood cupboard Metamorphosis!!!

My guest bathroom is very small, has one small under-the-sink cupboard for storage, no medicine cabinet and literally no counter space. Needless to say, storage is a little bit of an issue.
So when I came across this barn wood cabinet in an antique mall... I saw EXTRA STORAGE written all over it!!
While I like yellow, it clashes with the decor of my guest bathroom. I decided to paint it white, sand it a bit to give it a distressed "shabby" look and to accentuate the old barn wood. I didn't think to take pictures of the "process"... but I bet y'all have vivid enough imaginations to picture what painting a cupboard might look like. ;) After it was painted, I added some flower "wallies" to the outside of the cupboard to spruce it up a bit.

In case you have never used them... wallies are soooo easy to work with. Just wet the back, smooth over surface with a sponge... and let dry. Easy peasy. And when you want to remove them... just wet them again and peel!

It matches my Waverly Vintage Rose shower curtain...
And just look at this additional storage! haha

I painted the inside white as well...One more look...
And there is my metamorphosis!

Metamorphosis Monday: New Hair!!

Hey y'all! So I am still on vacation out in California... and besides sewing, I haven't been creating anything new. BUT! I did undergo a transformation... so I guess that kind of qualifies me to participate in Metamorphosis Monday. :)

I have been debating whether I should cut my hair or leave it long for quite some time. Well, I made my decision... without further ado, my metamorphosis!

Here is my before... somewhat long hair. Mind you, it was windy. OK, breezy really. Now you can see why I wanted to cut it off... no style, totally blah. ;)

I have had my eye on "The Pob"... The Posh Bob (I feel so "in" that I know it is called that... even though I only found out a few days ago. haha Yeah... I obviously live in a cave.)
Here is my inspiration:

I wanted something A Line-ish... and something relatively easy to maintain and style. So off to Mary (my hairstylist) I went. :)

And there is no turning back now! Yes, as a matter of fact I was terrified!

Styling my new short hair!

And here it is! My before and after shot:

I really like it. Very easy to style... takes me 10 minutes to blow dry instead of the 30 minutes with long hair. So far I have gotten that it resembles Katie Holmes and "a flapper" but no Pob. haha That's ok...I'll take what I can get. ;)

So there it is. My transformation. Hope it inspires you to make the change you have been contemplating doing forever... whatever that may be. The anticipation is the scary part... doing it is nothing. ;) For other great transformations, check out Between Naps on the Porch. Susan graciously hosts Metamorphosis Monday every week... so we all can enjoy the "befores and afters" in blogland. :)

Makeover Monday... The Mantle

I love the idea of a "Metamorphosis Monday"... and have seen quite a few blogs participating in it. I'm jumping on the bandwagon... mostly because I love before and after pictures! Check out Between Naps on the Porch... Love her Metamorphosis Monday posts. Not to mention her adorable porch. When I grow up, I want a porch like hers. ;) haha I know, I know...keep dreaming.

I can't help but think of "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka when I hear of Metamorphosis Monday... And we all know the story: poor Gregor turns into a giant bug. I wish I could have thoughts of butterflies... but my mind sees a giant beetle bug that was once a young man. Hence, Makeover Monday! ;) Lets get started!

Over the Mantle

I am thankful to have a fireplace... not that I need it (EVER) in South Texas... but it is nice entertain the thought of having a warm fire on a cold winter night. However, what on earth do I hang above THIS mantle??

This picture was taken on "move-in" day... notice the mantle. It is really too high for a traditional mirror or picture... and I'm not the "fine-art-over-the-mantle" type of girl anyway.

After much contemplation and shopping around to find something that would "go" with our decor and compliment a higher mantle... we (husband and I) decided that we would make our own wall art! (Blame it on watching way too much HGTV).

We started by getting 9 stretched art canvases. Any square size will work for this... but we chose to go with 12 x 12.
You can find these at Hobby Lobby, JoAnns or Michaels... or online here for $2.91 per canvas.

Next, pick out fabric... upholstery type works well... but is not necessarily the only type you can use. We are fortunate to have decorated our living room with two different Waverly prints...as you can find most Waverly fabrics at JoAnns. We also wanted to have different textures... so we chose a red suede, a burlap and a tooled leather-looking fabric in addition to both Waverly prints.

Cut the fabric into squares large enough to fit around the canvases. Since the canvases are stretched over a wood frame... you can easily staple gun or push pin the fabric in place. We chose the push pin method as it is easier to adjust if the fabric needs to be smoothed tighter or in a different direction.

Then measure the fabric covered canvases across the wall and hang! Voila!

Couches with Waverly print slipcovers... which inspired the fabric covered canvases.

Nevermind those wagon wheels up there... haha. I haven't decided what is going ON the mantle just yet. ;)
The mantle is still very much a work in progress... but at least we have something hanging over it, while pulling from our existing color scheme and patterns. It was an inexpensive project that was also quick to assemble. What I love about the fabric over stretched canvases...are the unlimited options of creativity...and they are versatile enough to go just about anywhere in the home. :)

Hoped y'all enjoyed my very first Makeover Monday!
