Tablescape Thursday: Romantic Rose

It is Tablescape Thursday time! Hosted by Susan at Between Naps on the Porch!

"Romantic Rose"

This week, I decided to try a softer, more "romantic" look for my tablescape. I started with this tablecloth. It is a Waverly print called "Vintage Rose" and it is one of my favorites!

I used Pink and Green dishes...

The pink plate had a vintage bird and trees print on it...
I found these at the Goodwill. :)

For the centerpiece, had cream colored roses displayed under a cloche.



And a little birdie...


I also set little tea light candles in small mason jars around the table.


I thought the greenish tinted vintage Coke glasses were cute with this theme. There is something about vintage Coke that can be so appropriate with romantic themes.



But we will not be having Coke tonight; we will be having a nice tall glass of sweet tea.



Roses again...


Some lanterns to give a romantic glow... which I'm sure would be a little more romantic if the afternoon sun wasn't blazing through the window behind it. I'm going for affect here, work with me. ;)


...and a taper candle with dried rose petals filling the bowl.

Chalkboard DIY Project

DIY Chalkboard Project

This DIY chalkboard project is so easy...

1. Buy an unfinished mini chalkboard. You can find them here.
2. Paint any color and any design that suits your fancy.
3. Screw in "Screw Eyes" on tops of chalkboards. You can find them here.
4. Tie ribbons through the screw eyes and hang!

Super easy. You can use as many chalkboards as you want to spell out whatever you choose!

I painted both sides... so I have 8 different boards.
I decided I would figure out the possible combinations I could create with 4 boards painted on each side... creating 8 unique designs. I vaguely remember combinations and Pascal's Triangle from high school and college math. However, while trying to figure out the formula, I blew my mind. haha So my math wizard husband came to the rescue and concluded 502 possible combinations can be made. I checked his work and he was right. ;)
502. Pretty impressive, eh?

My vision was to write single letters on each chalkboard to spell a word. But who am I to dictate how you write on your chalkboard? The Prairie believes in freedom of chalkboard expression and supports however you decide to write on them. ;)

That is more like it!

Or anywhere your heart desires...
I enjoy thinking up four letter words (nice ones!)... it helps keep the ol' noodle sharp. And any word combination/spelling exercise that helps me keep the advantage when playing Scrabble with the hubby, is welcomed by me. ;)

Show Us Where You Live Friday: Master Bedroom

Today is Show Us Where You Live Friday... hosted by Kelly at Kelly's Korner. This week is Master bedrooms. I like to consider my master bedroom "simple"... which may be an euphemism for "mildly neglected". ;) We started our black and white (or, more specifically, cream) theme when we first got married last September. Since neither one of us owned anything black or white (or at least the look we were trying to achieve)... we have SLOWLY been accumulating a few decor items here and there. Again, we will be moving by the end of the year and are waiting until we move into our next house before we really lose our marbles in the decorating department. ;) This is what we have so far:

Our bed...
The bedspread was from Target.
I LOVED this Waverly print.
We accented with red (Or, I should say, we started to accent with red)... red lamp shades and red suede pillows. More pillows to come later on.

We have two end tables... with a cream color skirt.
And, of course, my trusty bedside Bible.

On the left wall, we have a large black writing table with an old antique window.
The chair is desperately in need of a makeover. I'm thinking I will paint it black and shabby it up a little bit. I'll put that on my to-do list.

This is where all of the sewing experiments magic happens. I have a craft/guest room but for some reason, I love to sew in here instead. Plenty of space to cut out fabric and such.On my writing table I have a lamp, flowers, flower pens in a Terra Cotta pot (that I took as a favor from my bridal shower) and a picture of my family (who all live in CA and I miss very much).

From the desk and bed looking forward, we have two old dressers...

This dresser is also "mid-makeover". I am going to be decoupaging a scroll print on the drawers and changing out the hardware. More to follow on that in a later post.

We have several engagement and wedding pictures up in our room. We decided we would spare our guests from having to see wedding pics all over our living room. haha (Although they will have to stomach a few in the living room...)


The second dresser is a creamy white, old, old thing.
I'm thinking about giving it a fresh coat of paint and maybe changing out the hardware, too...

On top of the dresser are a few more pics and a perfume tray.



The door on the left goes to the master bathroom and the door on the right goes to the walk-in-closet.Further right...

In between the walk-in-closet and the main door, I have a full length mirror, a shelf and two pictures.

A word of advice for you single girls out there: Do not do what I did and declare that you will never get married. haha You will need a shoehorn to get your foot out of your mouth when you actually do. ;) As I was approaching my mid to late twenties (and had always figured that I would be married by 21- at the very latest) and still single, I decided my fate was the nunnery; hell would freeze before I found someone that met my "standard" of a marriage worthy man. My sister (also my maid of honor) had this newspaper made as a wedding gift... very fitting.

One of my favorite features of the room is the ceiling.

Metamorphosis Monday: Dining Room and Wine Rack Makeovers

It is Metamorphosis Monday on the prairie, hosted by Susan at Between Naps on the Porch!

This weekend I had two mini metamorphoses: one in the dining room and the other to the bathroom.

Before we begin, this post includes a little game called, "Where's Dollas"? (Dollas is the "Brangelina" name hybrid for my dogs Dolly and Dallas. Their names always seem to be a tongue twister... we either mistakenly call one Dollos or the other one Dally, haha... so when referring to both at once, it is Dollas.) The game is similar to "Where's Waldo?"... since my dogs like to follow me around everywhere and are always in my pictures. ;) How many times can you spot Dollas? ;) Here we go.

The Dining Room Metamorphosis:

The wall to the left is blank... and I wasn't quite sure what to put there. I would love a new hutch or china cabinet... but that is not in the budget right now.

I really dislike blank space in my house... so I decided to rearrange what I already have; I added an old door to the wall.

I wasn't done with it quite yet. ;) I needed to pretty it up a bit!So I added a heart-shaped grapevine wreath with some dried sunflowers that I made (tied with rafia) and red gingham curtains to the window.

I also added a tea light tin star...

...and a set of old skeleton keys.

The hand-painted red heart was hanging outside of the chapel on our wedding day...
It holds sentimental value for us. :)

Well, we were having a house full of guests this weekend (who were also sharing one bathroom)... so I decided that it would also make a great hand-towel and wash cloth holder!
I just rolled up some hand towels and wash cloths, tied them with jute twine and placed them in the wine rack.
Voila! Efficiency that is also aesthetically appealing: a win, win situation. ;)
